They may work behind the scenes, but their role is vital to every safe procedure and patient recovery. Makati Medical Center’s Central Sterilization Unit (CSU) was recognized by Solventum as the Metro Pacific Health (MPH) Sterilization Benchmark of Best Practices on October 17, 2024. The official award ceremony was held during the MPH Sterilization Summit on March 19, 2025, at the 8th Floor Tower 2 Makati Medical Center.
The award affirms CSU’s leadership in advancing sterilization excellence, infection control, and patient safety across the healthcare network.
To meet the growing demands for meticulous device reprocessing and stricter infection control, the CSU—led by Ms. Leah Ante, RN, Clinical Department Manager for Operative Nursing Services and CSU, and Ms. Marilou Mortel RMT, MBA, Unit Manager for CSU—implemented internationally benchmarked protocols, cutting-edge technologies, and continuous innovation.
Beyond technical excellence, CSU has built a culture rooted in precision, accountability, and patient-centered care. Their efforts have consistently led to low infection rates in device related incidences, improved sterilization turnaround times, and strict compliance with global quality benchmarks—positioning MakatiMed’s CSU as the model of excellence.
The recognition from Solventum underscores CSU’s vital contributions not only to patient safety and operational efficiency but also to elevating healthcare standards nationwide. Makati Medical Center remains committed to fostering innovation and excellence, inspiring continuous improvement across the healthcare sector.
Further strengthening its commitment to education, CSU, in partnership with the Center for Nursing Education Advancement and Research (CNEAR), launched the Sterilization Science Program on December 9, 2024 up to February 7, 2025 —a timely initiative that orients and trains nurses and allied health professionals in the principles, practices, and evolving standards of sterilization. Sterilization Science was included in the Webinar (Health Care & Nursing Updates) on January 31, 2025, as part of the preparation of Makatimed’s JCI reaccreditation.
