The NERD safe learning environment is focused on achievement, maintaining high standards, fostering positive relationships between colleagues, and encouraging leadership and staff engagement. With the current ongoing pandemic, the department embraced a progressive alternative competency enhancement (PACE) hybrid approach where learning takes place following a minimum health standard. A bundle of programs which address the competency gap of new hired nurses to perform their role at the clinical bedside based on the institutional practice standards.
- Nurse Residency Probationary Programs (NRPP) – An initiative, awarded on Talent Development Excellence in Hospital Management Asia 2019, is a six-month program designed to align new nurses’ competencies to institutional standards through clinical enhancement workshops, critical thinking exercises, and patient-centered attitude development.
- Target applicants: Registered Nurses
- Initial Requirements: CV, TOR, Copy of Professional License and Diploma
- Clinical Efficiency for Clinical Care Associates – A program designed hardwire the competencies of BSN graduates for their future role as a Registered Nurse. It includes initiatives as they prepare for the Nursing Licensure Examinations
- Target applicants: Non-License BSN graduates
- Initial Requirements: CV, TOR and Copy of Diploma
- Nursing Competency Workshop (NCW) Bridging Program – The Nursing Education Research and Development implemented a bridging program to all nursing staff who recently passed the Nursing Licensure Examination as part of the transition to practice to becoming a competent nurse. The program includes nursing core courses including safe medication practice worship, infusion therapy training, medical technology skills training and an introduction to the integrated hospital information management system (iHIMS) and Electronic Medical Records User Acceptance Training.
TEAM RE-INTEGRATION & BUILDING ENGAGEMENT (TRIBE) Initiative – Setting up a solid foundation for novice employees to thrive in the organization
The Nursing Education Research and Development developed an initiative using the acronym TRIBE, which means “Team Re-Integration & Building Engagement” Initiative to associate the experience of tribal society as they develop together in a common environment. A batch of NEW HIRES under the Nursing & Patient Care Services Division is considered a TRIBE who work together, share a common focus, and linked by the same goal of transitioning to practice seamlessly to become a proficient clinical nurse. The overall purpose of this program is to provide support to novice nurses and explore their current professional status as employee within the division.
TRIBE is a collection of activities that supports a nurse resident batch in the 6-month transition period. Activities includes:
- Reflective & Interactive Thought Exchange (RITE) Sessions
- Staff coaching and counselling
- Clinical Preceptorship and competency reinforcement
- Peer Support Group
- Leadership Visibility and engagement
- Milestone Celebrations
NURSING LICENSURE EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (NLEAP)
As COVID-19 surges, the more NATs were needed to compensate low hiring for Registered Nurses. This came with higher manpower needs to accommodate rising COVID-19 infection in the community. In June 2020, CENAP was formalized (Phase 1) and NATs were hired in collaboration with the untiring efforts of the Human Resources (HRMDD) – Talent Acquisition team. By the end of 2020, about 109 NATs joined the workforce expanding the services of MMC and providing work opportunities for underboard BSN graduates with hopes to eventually pass the NLE and become full-pledged Registered Nurses.
In fruition, CENAP Phase 2 proceeded with the launching of the Nursing Licensure Examination Assistance Program (N-LEAP) in February 2021. In time for the PRC-BON’s resumption of the nursing board exams, MMC provided financial aid and support for the NATs with MMC partnering with a review center Top Rank Academy, Inc.
As 2021 ended, the total NATs in MMC was 92. Among this, 43 were hired in 2021. As batches of hired NATs transitions to being Registered Nurses with two (2) batches of NLEs, the Hospital continues to hire NATs under the ENAP.
Makati Medical Center Nursing and Patient Care Services in collaboration with Human Resource Management and Development Division partnered with Top Rank Review Academy in preparing nursing assistants in preparing for the Nursing Licensure Examination. An Education Assistance Program Agreement was offered to interested staff providing all provision such as scheduling adjustments for weekend review sessions, coaching, capability building or readiness programs, consultation, and protected learning days before the examination.
GRADUATE STUDIES EDUCATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (GSAP)
A scholarship grant is offered to all aspiring Registered Nurses to have master’s degree in Nursing with the degree of Master of Art or Science in Nursing (MAN/ MSN). In partnership with affiliating colleges of Nursing & other Allied Health, the GSAP program aims to:
- Promote a positive environment and motivation through professional growth and development.
- Supports the journey of staff in terms of financial and developmental aspect in the graduate school.
- Provide opportunities for leadership and clinical development resulting to provisions of direct patient care at an advance level using a systematic and evidenced-based practice foundation.
- Promote retention and loyalty of staff
- Develop competent and credentialed leaders of Nursing
THE SCHOLASTIC ORIENTATION FOR INSTRUCTORS AND LECTURERS (SOIL)
The Scholastic Onboarding for Instructors & Lecturers (SOIL) Program is designed to orient and introduce the in-house clinical instructors and lecturers to the academic activities of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program. This program aims to equip and develop pool of clinical instructors and lecturers from the hospital with competencies on classroom management and teaching methodologies.
STUDENT ENHANCEMENT, ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT (SEED) PROGRAMS.

Face to Face Student Initiatives |
- Clinical Immersion & Internship – A partnership collaboration between Makati Medical Center Nursing Division and affiliated college of nursing to support student development and related learning experience activities. It caters both BSN and Nursing post graduate students who require clinical immersion on specific areas in nursing.
- Pre-College Observership Program (PCOP) – This is intended for Senior High School students or incoming fist year college to have a grasp of realities happening in a healthcare environment. It includes levelling of expectation to the job and valuing the roles and responsibilities of nurses as the heart of healthcare system.
Virtual/ Blended Learning Initiatives
- Nursing Student Clinical Bootcamp via Progressive Alternative Clinical Experience (PACE) – A flexible program that caters the needs of academic partners using viable methodology of learning in online, competency-based instructional design. This is an alternative to continue the Related Learning Experience (RLE) based on the academic requirement and needs of students.
- Virtual Facility Tour – Targets the learning needs of students by showing them the actual clinical set-up of a certain facility. This initiative is usually integrated as part of other student development programs.
- Integrated Skills Enhancement Program for Student Nurses – A program that targets BSN Level 3 and 4 Nursing Students to enhance competencies in specialty field of Nursing (e.g., perioperative nursing, critical care, dialysis etc.) after skills laboratory and prior their Related Learning Experience. It includes case discussion and advance student training (e.g., cardiac arrest simulation and Infusion Therapy) showcasing the latest trends and innovation in healthcare system.
NOTE: Transitioned to digital learning with limitations
- Career Development Activities – This includes programs such as career orientation and talk, mock interviews, and counselling.
- Student lectures and webinars – Makati Medical Center affiliates and partners invite students and faculty to all continuing nursing education programs. It showcases updates and current trend in clinical nursing and healthcare development. In addition, Makati Medical Center, Nursing and Patient Care Services Division is also open for partnership in the development of student learning sessions as supplement to the existing college programs.
- Professional Development Support for faculty – A flexible program that address the needed support of faculty / clinical instructors of partner affiliates. It is design to equip clinical educators with the latest trend, development, and practices at the bedside.
- Student Research Partnership – Makati Medical Center is open to partner with academic institutions in terms of supporting research activities of students such as ethics & technical review, being a member of the research panel and plans for data collection.
Pool of adjunct Instructors, In-house preceptors, or part time clinical instructors – Part of the advocacy that nurses are teachers, we developed clinical staff and managers who can handle students in the given learning activity.
The Specialty and General Nursing Services, supported by the Nursing Education Research and Development, revised, and launch the revised unit-based staff training plans of programs to enhance competencies of nurses depending on their specialty, services and population served. It uses preceptorship-based model and coaching approach as nurses are immersed at the bedside. The courses include the following track:

- Nursing Grand Rounds (NGR) – This program provides all nursing department a forum to share clinical expertise, experiences, nursing best practices and other topics of interest that help improve patient outcomes and enhance the patient experience.
- Medication Management and Use & Infusion Therapy (MMU & IVT) Updates – A program showcasing trends, development and updates in safe medication practices specifically related to infusion therapy.
A divisional program in sustaining a nursing research-friendly environment & culture of research. It includes bundle of intervention such as Leadership Engagement & Support, Nurse Research Fellowship Program, Nurse Research Agenda and Nursing Research Resources. Batch of Skilled Explorer of Experience, Knowledge, and Enhancements thru Research (SEEKER) nursing fellows are trained to conduct departmental researches based on the 2022 – 2024 Nursing Research Agenda:
